ABOUT ME

Professional Background

It is with great aspiration and drive that I have decided to put myself forward and create this portfolio. This is in the hope that it will show my drive and determination to do well in adult life.

I have just turned 17, and I study at UTC Reading; a prestigious, academic, engineering and Computer Science specialist college in Berkshire, England. I am an energetic, ambitious person who has developed a mature and responsible attitude towards learning and developing as an adult, whilst keeping my unique personality.

I am a strong-minded individual, and I take pride in maintaining a mature approach to any task that I undertake, or situation I am presented with. I greet opportunity with open arms and I am always ready for a challenge.

I am hugely interested in a career in Engineering, Computer Science or technology. I not only view technology as the future but also as a hobby, and it is this belief that will motivate me to drive forward any company I am part of.

Communication is key in any line of work, so I am incredibly proud of the way I present myself not only at work, but also as a person. My interpersonal skills are something that I value highly. I push myself to make a positive impact around the workplace, and to inspire and collaborate with others around me.

My strong interests in Engineering, Computer Science and their applications for business, are reflected in my studies; individual extra-curricular activities; and the interest I display in both these subjects in and out of school, will ensure that I approach any workplace or experience with the same positive attitude and commitment. I hope this will ultimately allow me to develop the skills necessary for a career in the field of Engineering and Computer Systems.

INTERNSHIP - BLACKBERRY

June 2017

After my work experience at blackberry, I was lucky enough to get invited back: this time as an intern. I worked closely with all the sales team and closed several deals. I gave a presentation to the PMs and CIO at the BTP and filmed a BBME instructional video with the Norfolk police.

WORK EXPERIENCE - BAE SYSTEMS

September 2015 - September 2015 (1 Week)

I partook in work experience at BAE systems in between school times in September. I was involved in a number of activities, including masterclasses in multiple engineering subcategories. I was lucky enough to be apart of the work experience scheme at BAE and I feel that the experience has expanded my knowledge of engineering in general (more specifically electronic engineering).

WORK EXPERIENCE - O2 (TELEFONICA)

November 2015 - December 2015

I was fortunate enough to be a part of a select group of individuals that took part in the work experience opportunities that O2 offers. Over the course of the week, I worked with: eCommerce, The Lab, Environments, Priority, MyO2, Product and Online Change. I also took part in a website creation masterclass. This experience was hugely beneficially for me, as the wide range of teams I worked with helped me to decide what I wanted to do when I start working.

WORK EXPERIENCE - BLACKBERRY

November 2015 - December 2015 (1 Week)

As the O2 headquarters in Slough is located next to the blackberry headquarters, I was lucky enough to know someone that works there and I was given the chance to do work experience with the company. Over the course of the week, I mainly shadowed a marketing director and learnt about sales. I also partook in a sales pitch given to a panel of judges. I believe the work I received helped further expand my knowledge on how a business is run and how the employees operate.

M&S

January 2017 - June 2017

I worked briefly at M&S as part of the sales team. This was a temporary job over this period. I decided not to take a full-time contract, as it was too many hours to accompany my studies. It did, however, enhance my sales skills and helped me develop myself when it came to working towards a target and working in a team.

YOUNG ENGINEERS OF BRITAIN

The Young Engineer for Britain Mentoring Programme is a STEM Competition and educational enrichment programme. This respected competition was started in 1979 and many successful engineers have taken part and received awards. The Mentoring Programme was started in 2013 and helps students use scientific values and research to develop projects of their own devising.

"We challenge school students to use their imagination to design and develop an exciting and original idea, system or research project . Your project should be based on a genuine need. Project ideas could be a solution for an everyday task, a social need, a clever innovation or a big improvement of a current idea or product. Projects must be engineering, technology, design or science based."

FUJITSU'S PROJECT INNOVATION

The idea/concept

A augmented reality headset to increase accuracy of maintenance, digging and repairs using a 3D underground rendering system.

This concept would produce a visual representation of the subterranean pipes and cables installed by the national grid. It would work by creating/rendering a 3D map of the country with the pipes and cables. The feedback system would work by using a map of sensors to detect where the incident has occurred (breaks, leaks, tears, etc.). This would then send feedback to the custom software which then, in turn, pin-points the exact location of the break and references the 3D render of the incident. Maintenance technicians would then receive the render and it would produce the image and the location on his augmented reality headset. We would use the location as a reference point to pull up the image on the augmented reality headset. This image could then be rotated and enlarged using voice commands.

Application of the concept

This concept has the potential to be of greater use and therefore of greater benefit to The National Grid, Thames water, . This map could be sold to civil engineering groups and local councils to stop the impedance of cables and gas pipes by offering them an image of the national grid as a reference so they can avoid severing pipes and cables. This would save the company a large sum of money in repair costs as well as giving the national grid a sellable product to increase profits.
The system would work by creating a UK wide map of the cables and pipes in 2-dimensional form, from this reference the technician closer to the action could see a true to life 3-dimensional image of the cables and pipes. This would also help monitor the health of the pipes and wires over their lifetime. This makes it easy to predict the dates that you’ll need to replace the wires and pipes.

As this is a concept/POC exclusive to Fujitsu, I cannot disclose anything further than the initial idea.

WORLD CLASS SCHOOLS

As student president, I was in charge of a team of the best students in our college. We were tasked with making a self-audit that demonstrated why we were world class students and why UTCR is a world class school.

"Many secondary schools in England already judged 'outstanding' by Ofsted have moved beyond this judgement. They have improved student progress, aspiration and achievement to such an extent that their standards rival those of the best schools internationally.

These schools need recognition. Parents want to know which secondary schools in the country are exceptional; universities want to know which schools are most successful at preparing students to excel in higher education; businesses want to know which schools are developing the brightest potential employees. The World Class Schools Quality Mark will provide parents, universities and businesses with what they want to know, and enhance England's internationally esteemed reputation for secondary education."

PC GENIUS

ABOUT US
PC Genius is a company I founded in 2016 when I developed a real passion for computing and wanted to make use of my skill. PC Genius is currently undergoing changes to take it to the next stage in it's history.

We buy, build and ship your customised PC, so all you have to do is sit and wait for it to arrive. We have thousands of customisation options to make your PC feel like home. We offer an extensive range of components from CPUs to custom liquid cooling. Just say the word and our team will make it happen.

HOW WE WORK
There are 4 main stages that we work in: Requesting a build, modifying your build, creating an invoice for your build and finally creating/building your PC. When you go through the 'BUILD' process, we receive your application and our team carefully review and build 3 systems around your specification points. We will then send you the customised systems with a full list of specifications and prices. After you have selected the build you like the most, the systems integrator assigned to your build will guide you through what modifications can further be made and how you can further customise the build to suit your needs. Once you have customised the PC to your liking, we will send you an invoice. You can pay with either debit card or PayPal. When your payment has been processed, we will start to create your build in our workshop. When this process starts, you will be sent a link to a 'BUILD TRACKER' which will show you the state of your PC.

NATIONAL GRID INNOVATION EVENT

The students were tasked with using wearable technology to address the challenges faced by the engineering industry, identifying how Fujitsu wearable technology can be used to solve problems faced by the industry partner leading their project. Peter Brett Associates (PBA), Thames Water, National Grid and AWE each set their own specific challenges for the students based on the overall brief.

After presenting their projects to industry partners last month, the winning team was announced; congratulations to "Dolphins", Adam Carter, Ethan Nijjer, Joshua Mabbs, Rohan Inston, Saksham Tyagi and Daniel Thompson. Their winning project was an augmented reality headset to increase the accuracy of maintenance, digging, and repairs using a 3D underground rendering system.

James Maynard, Fujitsu, commented: “The project was a very rewarding experience. Being able to put the latest Fujitsu IoT technology in the hands of the students and enabling them to think creatively with industry partners to develop proof of concept proposals overcoming business challenges of today was a great project to be part of. These students are the engineers of tomorrow, so need to be able to utilize technology of today to differentiate them and make their respective industries more competitive.”

PBA employees Claire Whitehouse, Katherine Dowdall and Douglas Whittaker said: “PBA would like to congratulate the winning team ‘Dolphins’ who demonstrated innovation and great team working with their RIM model.

“Working in Partnership with Fujitsu, AWE, Thames Water and National Grid this Core Project, successfully demonstrates how we were able to inspire and stimulate students’ engineering skills, allowing them to apply and confidently develop real life solutions.”
